Song Of the Day: April 9, 2005
The Marbles were there at the very beginning; this was the third Ork records 45 following Television's "Little Johnny Jewel" and Richard Hell's "Another World." During the label's brief existence, Terry Ork released a handful of classic punk/power pop/new wave discs. A lot of the geeky particulars are captured here. The Marbles 45 is one of the lesser known releases on the label; nonetheless it's a wonderful record, definitely power pop but recorded before the sound had been codified by the skinny tie-brigades. Upon hearing it, John Kass fired off an e-mail that pointed out that it sounds "just like the Shins." The Marbles had at least one other single on Jimboco that we don't like nearly as much.

Shins? Maybe vocally...
"I would sell my mother/For the chance to play guitar in his band..."
Awesome.
Maybe one of my personal favorite Little HIts so far. What a delightful guitar/piano break. The did nothing else of note? Is flip side as good?
Thw other single is OK, but a bit more "new wave." Flip is downtempo, not bad really, just...it sounds like a B-side. This is the best thing I've heard, although I suspect that a lot of bands of this era recorded additional material/demos that never got released. For instance there's a bunch of Speedies tracks on that Yellow Pills: prefill comp that weren't from the two singles.
Hmmm. That gives mae an idea.

My chum Mark was impressed by this lot when he saw them on "The Blank Generation" film. So was I...He 'll be made up to hear this. Very good - sounds more UK than Shins to my ears.
