Song Of the Day: June 16, 2005
The guys and I were discussing which of the Set's 45s we like best. Casey opts for the classic self-titled single (it appears on Rough Trade's Post-Punk 01 compilation), Shammy for "Alphaville," and Mickey and I like this one. I appreciate it for it's devilishly clever lyrics (a Monochrome Set hallmark) and spy theme ripoff chorus. I think Mickey likes it because of the reference to eating bugs.
Note to trainspotters: The version used for the 45 is the one from the Volume Contrast Brilliance LP. There is a longer version on Eligible Bachelors that was used on the Ambition: The Cherry Red Story compilation. It has a whistling intro and a longer guitar break. Just so you know.

"Jet Set Junta" is such a genius song... not sure I'll EVER tire of it and shocked that someone like Franz Ferdinand or the ilk haven't covered the damn thing already. That and "Eine Symphonie De Grauens" are so damn good it makes you wonder why Love Zombies and Strange Boutique are so damn lackluster.

Someone nearly did - Belle and Sebastian's 'La Pastie de la Bourgoisie' anybody?
I always liked 'Love Zombies' and 'He's Frank' amongst others.

The Monochrome Set....My all time favorite band, they have changed the way i listen to records. I got all their records in both vinyl and CD and there were a time when i even got three "elegible bachelors" specimens on the two format, one of them still sealed, just in case...It took me two years to track down a copy of their "lost week end" LP.
I interviewed Bertrand Burgalat, the french artist/producer, about four years ago for a local radio and my first question was about how much his own label "Tricatel" reminded me of Mike Alway's "El Records". He told me that i was right, he even approched Mike Alway, he wanted him to be his bussiness partner for the Tricatel label. Of course, the conversation came to a point when the Monochrome Set name was dropped and for him they were one of the most talented band he ever listened to, he told me how much he missed his long gone copy of "love zombies".
Just like everybody who've been hooked to their music i can't understand why they haven't been bigger than what they actually were.
One interesting fact, i got a spanish promo copy of the "jet set junta" single, made to promote the "volume contrast brilliance" LP. My copy comes from a spanish radio and it seems that they got a kind of classification on the back for the DJ's to play or not the records. On the back of my copy, there is one sentence..."De maxim interes"...enough said.
These guys are extremely underated. Great song choice.
