Song Of the Day: June 3, 2005

The Feelies-Dancing Barefoot

Bob Magazine Flexi, 1988

This awesome version of the Patti Smith classic later appeared on a promo 12" for a track from the Only Life LP; it may be the best of their B-side covers. I've also got nifty versions of "White Light White Heat," Jonathan Richman's "Now I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms," and Neil Young's "Barstool Blues." Does anyone have their version of "Egyptian Reggae?" I've never been able to track that one down.

Also, in their brief performance as the party band in the movie Something Wild, the Feelies (possibly as Yung Wu) performed "Fame" and "I'm a Believer." Has anybody ever heard the complete versions of those? I assume that they exist...

Jon,
thanks, I've been looking forward to you to posting an obscure feelies track. Where can I find those other covers you mention (barstool blues!). Furthermore, where can I track down any of the Feelies multiple side projects? i enjoyed the Yung Wu track you posted, is the rest of the LP as strong? And, if memory serves, I believe in "something wild" you can see a poster for the party in which the feelies are playing under a nom de plume. Was it the Wheelies? I can't recall

Joshua-

I love the Yung Wu record; it's like a completely laid-back, FUN Feelies record. I also like the Trypes EP (Coyote) quite a bit, but my favorite track under that alias is "A Plan Revised" from the Luxury Condos Coming To Your Neighborhood Soon comp, also on Coyote. I also read years ago (I believe in The Bob) that several members were involved in Beatles and Velvet Underground cover bands at various times.

best,

Jon

I'm pretty sure they were the Willies in "Something Wild" - that version of "I'm a Believer" is awesome.

The Feelies have a great quasi filmography - they were supposedly Jonathon Demme's inspiration and band choice for the concert movie that eventually became "Stop Making Sense" with Talking Heads.

Million and Mercer also did the music for "Smithereens" (starring Richard Hell!), which Dave Allman and I saw at the Bijou in Wesport circa 83. It was the first time I heard the feelies and fell in love with that sound; "Loveless Love" with the main character walking steadily faster to the beat...After reading the music credits at the end, I was sure that song must have been "Guitar Beat" by the Raybeats, which I bought right away. Whoops (a happy mistake). Dave was the first to finally score Crazy Rhythms.

Which 22 years after first hearing remains my absolute favorite record.
