Song Of the Day: August 21, 2005

The Pedaljets - Liking You

From the Lp Today Today, Twilight Records, 1988

I used to go see these guys a lot, and I was always sort of amazed at how much I liked them because they seemed kind of enigmatic to me. Besides the fact that they looked more like rock musicians than most of the bands I knew personally and were from KC, which meant I didn't see them at the bar/laundromat/record store all the time, they were really LOUD and that wasn't really my thing. I mean, I liked Husker Du just fine, but I was never as smitten as most of the people I was hanging out with. Anyway, even with a wall of fuzzy guitar blare, Mike Allmayer's uncommon pop smarts and the band's arrangement acumen shone through on nearly every song; "Liking You" is the textbook example.

I remember talking to Rob about the PedalJets poster that showed up in the Saturday Night Live credits for about two years.

He said, "We keep hoping that some agent is going to see that and get the subliminal message...'PedalJets! I need PedalJets! Get me PedalJets!'"

Unfortunately, this never happened.

That whole "Today Today" album rocks like a rockin' thing should rock.

Can I just say in a completely naive-sounding and irony-free way that I really appreciate this site? I'm a recent convert to the mp3blogwhatever, and although I've enjoyed amassing massive quantities of obscure and sometimes even good music junk, your site is one of the only ones out there that actually has really good stuff on it. Thanks.

Jon, do the Pedal Jets and Von Bulows have any relation? I remember hearing "Summer Song" on the Big Hits from Mid-America LP and absolutely loving it. Heard some of lead singer Lori Wray's later bands and didn't care for them much, bu I wonder if there's any additonal Von Bulows material that lives up to "Summer Song."

Mike-

Yes, they were pretty much the same band with Lori added on vocals. they had a handful of songs recorded, including a truly great version of "To Sir, With Love."

...and don't forget another Pedaljets side project, the Catherines. Another female vocalist (Ala?), some keyboards, and (perhaps) a bit of goth went into this one. The singer is now in another band, whose name escapes me at the moment
(...a short Google later...)aha! Budoir. It appears that she is now "Ala Sharon."

Seemed like Blake Norris had a Von Bulow's bootleg that included a song called "Linda for a Day" or something like that. I'd like to hear that one again.

This is an amazing song. For one thing, the bass guitar in the intro stands as the definitive way a bass should be recorded -- tunefully but DEEP. And talk about a real rock band. When The Lilacs opened for Pedaljets in Lawrence, they were super late to the show cuz Allmeyer had been thrown in jail for too many parking tickets. When he finally showed, they melted the place. Sigh. KK

Really nice seeing you pick this one, Jon. Sorry I'm late to finding it, but better late than never. As you know I worked with The Pedaljets, as roadie and Rob Morrow Looker Afterer (is that a real phrase? LOL).....anyhoo, Many good shows and and the stories....Austin with The Catherines, the Minneapolis tour with The Pedaljets, etc......also, Lori Wray put out a 7" after she moved to the Twin Cities that is outstanding, and I would be glad to dub a copy onto cassette for anyone that wants it! :)
