Song Of the Day: September 13, 2005
Someday when I write that huge, lavishly illustrated coffee-table book on Flying Nun Records, I can verify some of the stories that have become part of the label's legend, like the one about the Jean-Paul Sartre Experience showing up at the FN Christmas party and asking to play. According to the Flying Nun trading cards (Yes!) this is exactly what happened, which of course, led to several releases. "Shadows" is perhaps the most beautiful thing the band ever came up with, but there are plenty of great tunes throughout the discography.

I'm definitely a fan of Flying Nun's -- just as I'm a fan of Factory and Sarah records.
Unfortunately, we don't have a distributor for FN's records here in Brazil
Jon, please keep working on that book because there are plenty of us who would like to read it. Despite F-Nun's best efforts the histories on their website are pretty spotty. As far as I can tell only a few other reliable sources exist--like Chris Knox's oral history in Forced Exposure #18 and the excellent N.Z. music website thebigcity.co.nz. A comprehensive guide to the label would be a wonderful asset and then I could finally put away my trading cards!
I have an import LP by JPSE. They're one of my 2 favorite "unknown" bands (the other is Daisy from Athens, GA.).
Try "I Like Rain", "Loving Grapevine" and especially "Own Two Feet".
How fantastic to hear this song again!..I used to have the album and JSPE's Love Songs(the Communion label version) on cassette and that was a terrific album as well
I definately concur with Cam on further JPSE tracks to hear if you haven't
..Now to try to hunt down the cds...
The Xmas Party story ..a good yarn, but Flying Nun had already heard from JPS via the student radio compilation "Weird Culture, Weird Custom" , recorded and released via the local campus station UFM ,who were FNun's biggest supporter in Christchurch -and did a huge amount to get the label's music to the public. JPS recorded "Let that Good Thing Grow" for the "Weird Culture .." record.
