Song Of the Day, September 15, 2005

The Rayders - Working Man

Zodiac Records 45, 1966

Some of the best 60s 45s are the result of a band copping superficial aspects of their heroes' style and blowing those aspects up to ridiculous proportions. Example: This bald faced Who cop, which despite it's obviously derivative nature is nearly as exciting as the genuine article. This can be found on Wild Things Vol. 2 (Zero Records), which like the first volume, is a uniformly excellent collection of rare New Zealand beat.

That breakdown in the middle sounded like Sonic Youth. Craziness.

Rockin. The guy who put this comp out (John Baker) was in his early twenties at the time and is now the White Stripes road manager. The best track comes from the Music Convention tho'. Their "Belly Board Beat" is a fuzzed out stomper that would put many bands to shame nowadays. This song originally appeared on the soundtrack to New Zealand's first-ever surf movie called "Children Of The Sun". They did the soundtrack....good luck getting a copy now....very rare. The Music Convention also have a song called "Footprints On My Mind" on a recently released compilation of NZ psychedelia/beat music. Other great Songs on that Wild Things comp include the Pleazers cover of Otis Redding's "Security" and the Spectres "Anything You Like".
