Song Of the Day: October 7, 2005

The Lighthouse Keepers could be loosley grouped in with other Australian post-punks like the Triffids and Go-Betweens; this is our favorite of their singles. Singer Juliet Ward's slightly sour vocals contrast nicely with a fairly straightforward folk rock background.

Just out of curiosity, I looked to see if Lipsnipegroin, their double CD, is still available. Here's the entire collection downloadable as WMAs:

So many great songs.

I remember the first time I saw the Lighthouse Keepers, on the bottom of a bill including New Order and John Cooper Clarke, deep in the bowels of the long gone Sydney Trade Union Club. It took them 6 songs to break three bass strings, at which point they stormed off!

Several members, including Juliette, later formed The Widdershins, who put out at least one album and a number of singles on (I think) Waterfront Records
