The Grottybeats-Love Games

Grot Records 45, 1984

The synthy snare in the intro does not bode well, but those who presevere will be rewarded with a song that sounds a bit like what Dwight Twilley could have spent the mid-80s doing. Raging Beatlephobes should pass this over (if not for the band's name alone) for that bridge, a nifty rip from the Fab Four playbook ca. A Hard Day's Night. Possibly, maybe even probably, the only release from these Canadians.

The Someloves-It's My Time

Citadel records 45, 1986

The Someloves were essentially the duo of Dom Mariani (Formerly of the Stems, later of the DM3) and Darryl Mather. This, their debut disc, featured members of the Hoodoo Gurus and Eastern Dark, and was one of the very best of an onslaught of excellent loud pop 45s from Australia during the second half of the 80s, many of which said "Citadel" on the label (the magnificent Take Everything, Leave Nothing double LP is an excellent overview) and/or "Engineered by Alan Thorne" on the sleeve. The flip, "Don't Talk About Us," is easily as good as the nominal A-side. The Someloves made another couple of singles and a terrific LP, Something Or Other, but never again sounded quite so tough as they did here.
