Another Sarah Day
Another Sunny Day — Horseriding
(Sarah Records 45, 1989)
One of two flipsides to “You Should All Be Murdered,” Another Sunny Day’s fourth single for Sarah Records, “Horseriding” is among my favorite of Harvey Williams’ tunes. This is Williams at his most winsome — as you can tell from the title of that a-side, adorability was not always one of his strong suits — And I’ve long thought this song was a specific influence on a lot of the second-generation Sarah bands. And am I crazy, or is that recurrent acoustic guitar hook based on the mandolin part at the end of “Maggie May”?

While I love(d) alot of the Sarah stuff, I feel it has contributed a certain amount to my dissipating interest in proper pop and rock. After heavy doses of Sarah (and C86 bands) I’ve found it harder to appreciate pop song structure, often unwillingly tuning out for all but the first 30 seconds or so of a song, and coming back in only for choruses. Its not a desirable state.
Then there are the New Pornographers whose constantly shifting dynamics holds my attention very well, at all times.
