Song Of the Day: March 16, 2005

The Turbines-Skull and Crossbones

From the EP "Last Dance Before Highway,"
Big Time Records, 1985

We're big fans of this Boston combo's massive rendition of the Sparkle Moore rockabilly obscurity "Skull and Crossbones." In fact we'd go so far as to say that this EP easily blows anything the Cramps have done since they left IRS out of the stagnant, slimy water. While Jack Hickey's guitar steals the show, it's worth noting that frontman John Hovorka made several strange DIY records in the early eighties that bear no resemblance to this. There was a full-length LP that followed called Magic Fingers and Hourly Rates on New Rose (France), which I sold about 15 years ago for the price of a pack of cigarettes. Wish I hadn't.

I liked how this band looked on stage, like they just got done working on your car.

The first Turbines single "Wah Hey" b/w "No Sure Bet" is pretty great, too. It's a shorter, yet somehow better version of "Wah Hey". There's also a Turbines track on the first (or second?) Throbbing Lobster comp.

On a vaguely realated note, I almost bought a Gretsch guitar from John Hovorka, but it had some structural issues and I was fairly skint at the time.

Uh, I thought I made those other albums in the late 90's and 00's.

John-

I'm sorry. I meant the 2x4s stuff.

Best,

Apology accepted. Definitely. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, too. (And) I must have been looking at “80’s” like it was “90’s”, dunno. Just for the record, both Turbines albums were also DIY. We paid for them out of our own pockets and chose the producers, engineers, the material and the song arrangements ourselves. We got advances for both of them, but in both cases, a while after they were recorded. Meanwhile, thanks for liking that stuff. It was a lot of fun, but when Jack left the band I didn’t see any point in continuing with the Turbines. I figured I might as well do something else, so I did. I agree that the single version of Wah-Hey! is better. As for Throbbing Lobster compilations, we contributed I Get Excited to the first one, and an extra track from the first album session, Rockpile, to the third one. AND (just noticing the "sidebar" on this site) you have my permission to go ahead and keep that song up there on your site, that's fine. In fact, I appreciate it.
