Song Of the Day: May 17, 2005

Jane-It's a Fine Day

Cherry Red Records 45, 1983

This probably isn't for everybody, (or then again, maybe it is) but I've always thought this was an amazing, haunting gem of a record. It has the intimacy of an improvised lullabye, or a work song for folding laundry. The inevitable "house" remixes miss the point, stripping the song of it's awesome quiet.

Interesting and beautiful. I used to have a CD of what was I guess a remix or a sampled dance track using the vocals from this--of course I had no idea that song was derivative of anything. So a pleasant surprise with this track. Thanks.

Of the tracks that sample this, there was the Opus 6 (or was it Opus 3 -- can't remember) thing, that wasn't terribly good, but I have to go to bat for Orbital's "Halcyon", which gets bonus points for being beautiful and creepy at the same time: the Hartnoll brothers wrote the track as a reaction to their Mom's sleeping pill dependency.
