Currently Making Us Swoon:

...is the new Pernice Brothers CD, Discover a Lovlier You. Joe Pernice is perhaps the best American lyricist in the game today, as well as a brilliant tunesmith who knows just when to throw in a minor chord. The band weaves a warm blanket of ringing guitars and layered harmonies (and an occasional Chills-like keyboard bit). Brian Wilson once stated that he wanted to produce an album of sounds hat "make the listener feel loved." He would surely be proud of the Pernice Brothers. Their fourth consecutive masterpiece? We don't know, but we are all hovering about six inches off the floor when this one plays in the vicinity.

Check out the band's very cool and amusing website, making sure to stop at the video for "Weakest Shade of Blue" and Joe's episode of "Cribs."

I hate to say it, but after loving their last two, this one really disappointed me.

However, I will happily go to the show anyway, not just because they will play old songs, but because of their drummer. Have you seen this guy? He's like seven feet tall and a hundred pounds, and during every single song he sings along with exaggerated lip movements. Drums well, too.

mamster-

Is this the guy from the Bigger Lovers? That's who they had when I saw them. I assume they'll be working this LP for awhile, and I shouldn't yet be concerned that there aren't any KC or Lawrencce dates.

On a related note, has anyone heard the new Orange Peels album yet? I've always been an Allen Clapp fan, and I read this article on him today that piqued my interest. The story of how he met his wife is freaking adorable: http://popmatters.com/music/interviews/orange-peels-050616.shtml

Just picked up the Pernice Bros album and it's making my day.

I agree that this album has been a letdown. The other had at least two songs that would have saved ANY album, but this one, so far, doesn't have those spectacular standouts.

In fact, when I got the promo, I only listened to it a few times before writing it off as the best SOUNDING, but not the most engaging. This thread brought me back to it, and it still isn't "doing it" for me. Although the sounds are outstanding. And clever little treats are everywhere.

That said, I'll buy it when it comes out....

Amazing Glow could save ANY album. In fact, Amazing Glimmer could have saved it. I also think There Goes the Sun quite the standout track. I have never really thought that any of their records are great all the way through, but they always have enough to make it worthwhile. I saw them about a month ago and I don't think they played one bad/boring/second rate song. Plus he Finally played 'bum leg' live in an accoustic encore.
They could release one fantastic best of..
