Song Of the Day: June 13, 2005
Fowler Jones suggested this one. I saw the Balancing Act open for the Hoodoo Gurus in 1987 and enjoyed them far more than the headliners. In retrospect, they are far closer to Crosby, Stills and Nash (No Young) than I would ever have admitted at the time, but I find this LP, their first, to have maintained enough oddball charm that there are several songs from it I could have used without misgivings.

Yeah - I loved these guys when I was in college. I especially fond of their Peter Case produced EP New Campfire Songs. "A TV Guide in the Olduvaia Gorge" is one of my all-time favorite tunes...
Their follow-up album Curtains was great too, especially with edgeier production from Gang of Four's Andy Gill.
Check out Don Thompson's shrine to The Balancing Act over at http://www.werenotlost.com. Like the dB's web site, band members are known to respond to postings on the message board from time to time. Coolness!
There's another version of "Red Umbrella" by these guys on "Radio Tokyo Tapes Volume 3". It's got a different energy, more lively and less studio-produced. The version on Three Squares and a Roof is still pretty great, tho.
Oh, and "New Campfire Songs" was included on the 1988 CD release from IRS.
