Wednesday, June 15, 2005Song Of the Day: June 15, 2005Boston's Outlets were a beloved scene fixture at about the same time as the not terribly dissimilar Neighborhoods. They were definitely a pop band, but with more of a sneer than most. Several singles, an album for Enigma, and assorted compilation cuts were rolled out, but today Guitarist Rick Barton has much more notoriety with the Dropkick Murphys. I hope this doesn't blow his street-punk cred.

Strangely, this past weekend I picked up Rhino's D.I.Y. CD with the Outlets "Knock Me Down" on it (very good, though I prefer this song).
God, I haven't thought about the Neighborhoods in like 18 years. You don't have "Prettiest Girl" lying around, do you? Me n my friend Terry would go to Rockitz in Richmond (VA)every wednesday night throughout the mid to late 80s and check out whichever touring Boston band was passing through and the booker would always let us in for free because we run up enough of a bar bill for the bar to break even for the evening. I'm trying to remember if I saw the Volcano Suns or the Neighborhoods more.
(And I was rifling through some old cassettes today and I found "Heavens" by Big Dipper and I thought of you. So was "All Going Out Together" the Coolest Song of The 80s or am I crazy?)
I could swear I've heard this song somewhere before. Not a damn clue as to where, though. Still makes my head nod.
a cover of "Best Friends" can be found on Down By Laws debut album (on Epitaph, 1991).
The connection to The Outlets is that DBL singer is Dave Smalley who used to sing in DYS - one of Bostons many hardcore bands from the early eighties.
The DBL version is pretty close to the original I might add - only the vocals differ - there's more sneer to the Outlets version. Dave Smalley is more of a crooner. In a punkrock way.
This is so inderrated. One of the best singles to come out of Boston in the 80s. Rumor has it people are working on releasing the back complete Outlets catalog. The Outlets also released a long out of print album in the 80's. 2 CDs were released in the past couple of years. One of the guys in the band went on to start the Dropkick Murphys and Spinga the singer of SSD was their Manager.
FYI - Springa wasn't their manager , he was an occasional roadie and a friend of the band.
