Song Of the Day: June 4, 2005
Kaleidoscope-Jenny Artichoke
Fontana Records 45, 1968
According to the liner notes of Dive Into Yesterday, a fine anthology of this amazing UK psych band, "Jenny Artichoke" was written as a desperate attempt at a hit single, and you can sort of tell. It's just absurdly catchy in a way that probably would have driven you nuts had you been forced to hear it over and over, but for some reason, like several other brilliant Kaleidoscope records it didn't sell. My wife Kit and I absolutely love this song; several other friends have also admitted a fondness, albeit with a sheepish expression. It's easy to tell your hipster friends you like "Flight From Ashiya," but something like this might be closer to what we mean by the term "guilty pleasure."

I was just talking about these guys the other day. "Dream for Julie" ends up on nearly every mixtape that I make, as does "In My Box" by their later incarnation, Fairfield Parlour. Good stuff...
Yipes, that's about a million times awesomer than "Flight From Ashiya." I'm sure I'll end up sticking it on a mix next to "Jennifer Eccles" at some point this summer.
Great. Never been a fan of these guys but obviously had missed this good stuff. What's their best LP (or comp) for equally bubblegum-type gear?
Sounds like they heard the Tremeloes' "Here Comes My Baby" and thought "Hey, we can write a hit song like that!"
Extra plagiarism points for the Donovan-like vocal inflections.
Annoymous-
The one pictured, Dive Into Yesterday, is probably the most readily available, and compiles a good amount of their material recorded under the Kaleidoscope name.
best,
Jon
