Song Of the Day: June 9, 2005
I have been absolutely obsessed with this bit of Marxist jangle-pop for about the past two months, but I don't think it's the snippets of socialist imagery that move me nearly as much as the incredible drumming. McCarthy has a fairly lengthy discography by the standards of indie-pop bands of the era, but they are most famous for contributing Tim Gane and Laetittia Sadier to Stereolab. You might want to check out some of their CD re-issues at the Cherry Red Records website.

Hahahaha ... I agree. Then again, I have a problem where I don't really hear the lyrics too well. The drumming - what the hell is going on here? Incredible.
It's remarkable how 80's UK bands had cornered the market on ace precision drummers. The Wedding Present, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Chameleons, etc. Have you heard the McCarthy song "Frans Hals"?
Heh. I can't help but think of the (apocryphal?) scene from "24-Hour Party People" where Martin Hannett exiles Joy Division's Stephen Morris to the roof with his drumkit.
Heaven is filled with the sound of arpeggios in triplets.
" It's remarkable how 80's UK bands had cornered the market on ace precision drummers... Echo and the Bunnymen..."
Umm... no to be rude or anything, but that was a drum machine, dude. The "Echo" in Echo and the Bunnymen comes from the fact that they named their drum machine Echo.
Sir,
Actually Echo the drum machine was replaced by Pete De Freitas the human being after only one indie 45 and a compilation cut. All Echo and the Bunnymen LPs feature the "ace precision drumming" of Mr. De Freitas. Mr. Chalfen's comment stands. And Andrew, that McCarthy song you mention is on my "to track down" list.
best,
Jon
Laurence Colbert from Ride was extremely talented too. This is a really fantastic blog by the way - really enjoying going through the archive - cheers
Thank you!
