Songs of The Day, June 11-12
Playing catch up again today, so here are two of our favorite musings on the current season. The Da Biz track was also released as "Can't Wait 'Til the Summer Comes " under the name Ronnie Mayor, whom longtime Little Hits watchers may remember from the Tours track we ran a while back. Chris Stamey is of course one of our biggest heroes. This record was produced by Alex Chilton; the mix is erratic and effective in a way that recalls Big Star's 3rd, although the material obviously isn't nearly so dark. I was overjoyed to hear Mr. Stamey perform this song at his recent Bottleneck show, despite the depressing fact that it was atteneded by about five people.
The original dBs have reunited, and an album and tour are forthcoming. See the dBs website for details.

Ooh, "The Summer Sun" has been a longtime favorite, and I was bummed about missing the Bottleneck show. Stamey's latest album (which features TWO newly-recorded takes on the song) is a mixed bag, but the parts that work are pretty swell.
The thought of a new dB's album makes me want to do about ten backflips.
According to Stamey, only a few choice dates this year including Chicago in September. On the dB's message board, he said:
>Thanks for all the good ideas. I think the band is going to get to work on a new record rather than hop in a van. We are indeed playing in Chicago this year, maybe a few other places, but our idea is more festivals and "special events" (like the outdoor festival we are playing in the Windy City).
>Maybe next year, if there's a new record.
>The Southgate House would certainly be nice eventually, a great room.
>Maybe on a boat on the Hudson?
Wow. The guitar sound on that Da Biz song is smokin'. Also one of the best-executed pick slides I've ever laid ears on.
Consider me red-faced for missing Stamey TWICE (KC and Lawrence). I have an excuse for the latter offense, as I didn't know about it; I have no such alibi for the former.
You're playing catchup? I'm commenting on a June post!!! ;)
Anyhoo, as much as I respect Summer Sun as a pop classic, as well as the source of Kim Williams's band name, I've always preferred "Where the Fun Is" myself. I suppose Summer Sun just isn't sad enough for me. ;)
I'll be sending some annoying suggestions to you shortly...woo-hoo!
