The Neighborhoods - Arrogance
From The High Hard One, Restless Records LP, 1986
Here, in a nutshell, is the evolution of Boston's beloved Neighborhoods, from the mod/pop leanings of the first single (the band photo on the back of the sleeve bears this out) to the middle of the decade, when they'd assimilated the same beloved-in-their-youth hard rock bands that infected the Replacements. "Arrogance" is probably the best song on a good album. I saw them a couple of years later after they signed to Imago; the deal seemed to have bought them a lot of shiny new gear. By that point they were a fine bar band (not as common a commodity as you might think, especially nowadays) but not much more.

I just found this place yesterday and thought one of my other personalities had started a blog. Big Dipper? Thin White Rope? Trypes/Feelies? And now the friggin NEIGHBORHOODS? Did you live in Columbia, SC between '86 and '90? Seriously...
Yep, The High Hard One was a great little rock nugget (I'd pick Uniforms & Insignias as my favorite but it's all relative) before they tipped the scales in favor of "power" over "pop." But I've seen all of the above bands play, and the 'Hoods live were unequalled at the time. When the original drummer bailed (Mike Quagglio? is that right?) they began to approach metal territory and I started to lose interest..but still feel they were one of the ones that should have made it bigger than they did.
Hi Jon,
Very cool site. I also love the photo of your cats...they are very cute!
See you at class,
Alice
I always loved the debut single, but never anything they recorded afterwards. You can find the B-side of the single here.
Thanks for the post! I used to have Arrogance from the Restless Records sampler. So great to get it again!!!
