Song Of the Day: November 3, 2005

Glass Moon - Simon

From the album Growing Up In The Dark,
Radio Records 1982

Several years ago at a party the discussion of great obscure 80's songs on the radio popped up. Several people tossed out names like Wire Train or Red Rockers. Scoff, that's child's play! I quickly spouted "Anybody remember that song about Albert Einstein's illegitimate son?" You know, Glass Moon's "Simon"?

Hailing from Raleigh, NC; Glass Moon was led by the great Dave Adams. Dave later had some success as producer of the Connells "Darker Days" as well as his sole solo album in '86 called "Dancing in My Sleep". Along with "Simon," Growing Up In The Dark has a fab version of the Hollies' "On A Carousel."

The first S/T album and Growing Up In The Dark are available on Renaissance Records. Thanks to Jeremy Morris for turning me onto this reissue.

Another great Einstein-inspired song was from the Acoustinauts -- a short-lived NW combo on Pop Llama. The title track to their debut, "Inhale Einstein," posited that all matter constantly circulates and every day we swap atoms with those who lived before us -- hence the chorus: "inhale Einstein, exhale Hitler." I haven't heard it in over 15 years so here's a requst for a future LH post...

They can't all be winners, not even on Little Hits. I agree with the "Mike & The Mechanics" comment. This one is just dumb.

is there any truth to the fact the obscurity of the song SIMON by GLASS MOON to this day is due ot the fact that the family of Albert Einstein was suing them to get the song taken off the radio? Cuz no radio stations even the ones that play the classic & 80's retro formats ... not one I've heard has ever played it since the early 80's when it was initially released.

Doesn't that album also have a great cover of Solsbury Hill. Also, if I'm not mistaken, one of the members was from South America and in the mid eighties left the group to go back there.
