Song Of the Day: November 6, 2005
Rick Rock (aka Parthenon Huxley) - Sputnik
Big Groovy Records 45, 1983
I first heard Rick Rock on the Mondo Montage LP with the song "Buddha Buddha" which is a great song in itself. Later came More Mondo with the great Rick Rock tune "Button (Love Is No Sentimental Journey)." With those two songs I was a fan. Both "Buddha Buddha" and "Button" later appeared on the Parthenon Huxley LP Sunny Nights on Columbia Records. At a local record show I ran across "THE" Rick Rock single. Side A is "Buddha Buddha" and Side B is "Sputnik." Clocking in at a mere 2:10 "Sputnik" is a great bit of Cold War Power Pop.
In April 2005 I had a chance to play with P Hux (Rick Rock) and showed him my 45. He played "Sputnik" that night in my honor (and gave me a t-shirt). For all things relating to P Hux go here.

You're lucky. I've got a non-promo copy I bought back in the day, which came with no picture sleeve.
Sorry. I didn't know it was a proper release. I just assumed it was promo only for radio or something.
I always wandered who sang Bhuda Bhuda. I have a bootleg dvd of REM from meredith college 1985 and this song from Rick Rocks' set was included as a bonus. Turns out he posted the DVD up.

Rick Rock was big doings around our Chapel Hill college/indy radio station, WXYC, in 1980 or whenever it was. We thought RR might break out into the big time. Unfortunately, all of the bands we thought might break out from that music scene -- Let's Action, Flat Duo Jets, that REMish band of Holden's that I really ought to remember, others I can't recollect at all -- just didn't. Big regrets all around. You ought to post Buddha Buddha up here sometime. I'd absolutely love to get a copy of that one, and no big surprise that I can't find it on file sharing sites like Limewire.
Holden Richards' band you are referring to was One Plus Two. He also had The Swamis which were quite good. I beleive its Let's Active not Let's Action (though that's a cool name in itself).
